Nordic Women Mediators Annual Meeting 2021 - Opening Event
The Nordic Women Mediators’(NWM) annual meeting 2021 takes place in Reykjavík, 17-19 November. This year, the meeting is marked by two major international crises: the COVID-19 pandemic and the Taliban take-over in Afghanistan.

At the opening of the NWM annual meeting, Mahbouba Seraj, journalist, women’s rights activist, and the founder of the Afghan Women’s Network, and Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, a NWM member, the deputy special representative for political affairs and electoral assistance of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, and a former country representative of UN Women in Afghanistan, will talk about the current situation and the future of the women and girls of Afghanistan, including how the international community can support women's engagement in peace processes.

Twenty years of international presence in Afghanistan following the US-led invasion – which coincided with extensive efforts by local, national and international actors to improve meaningful participation of women in community development and peace processes – came to an end when the Taliban took control in August 2021.

The Nordic Women Mediators (NWM) is a network of women from the five Nordic countries who have professional expertise relevant to conflict mediation, peacebuilding and negotiations. Its mission is to enable Nordic women mediators and peacebuilders to advance the inclusion and meaningful participation of women in all phases of peace processes in order to contribute to achieving and sustaining peace.
